Tongue & Groove

What's been going down ...

For the third year running, the mighty Groove engine powered the party for staff and exhibitors at the Bentley Wood Fair. The wood people (and blacksmiths, and charcoal burners, and all the other country crafts folk) just love to rock, so it was time to unleash the Hendrix and Zeppelin numbers from the extensive T & G repertoire. As usual, this was one riotous party, and despite it being late September, sweat was soon dripping from the walls of the cavernous beer marquee, and young woodsmen were expressing their high spirits shinning up the alarmingly high tent poles. Things got so exciting that Phil The Flying Fox managed to crack his xeophoid bone (bottom of the rib cage) during an over-exuberant gymnastic display at the culmination of the show. It takes more than mere physical injury to stop The Fox though, and when the crowd cheered for more, the plucky frontman managed to squeeze enough air into his lungs to belt out "Whole lotta love" and "Rock'n'roll". Awesome!

A huge marquee behind The Yew Tree pub in Chalvington hosted the celebrations to mark Rob and Jo's wedding, and to see the young couple off on their adventures travelling the world. They kindly warmed up the enthusiastic crowd of friends and relations with a fine set from their own band, The Fantastic Captains, before handing over to Tongue and Groove to party till closedown. Despite the venue being deep in the Sussex countryside, local officials were on hand with decibel meters to ensure that the fun and festivities did not adversely affect the tranquillity of this rural idyll. Rest assured, sweet dreamers, that The Groove can rock at any volume.

Frankie M chose Stanmer House, near Brighton, as the charming venue for her 40th birthday celebrations, and Tongue and Groove for the moves and the tunes. Tom sat in again behind the kit for this one, and was solid with the beat (if slightly less comfortable with the intro dance) as the guests boogied into the night.

Ruth and Richard live in a beautiful house deep in the countryside near Chailey. There's not much they could do to improve this picturesque setting, other than to have a huge stage built in the back garden, light the house and grounds with Fil's amazing psychedelic projections, and have Tongue and Groove rock a most awesome and spectacular 50th birthday party, that they and their many lovely friends will remember fondly for many years to come.

The grand surroundings of Lewes Town Hall were the setting for Dawn and Mitch's wedding party, and what a party it was. Our regular beatmaster Timbo was on his hols, so we welcomed stand-in sticksman Tom to the crazy world of Tongue and Groove. Phil the Fox made a spectacular entrance on a balcony high above the stage, but the access door locked behind him, necessitating a precarious climb down in his giant platform boots. The sure footed Fox made it safely, to lead a blistering performance that rocked this amazing party. Don't take our word for it; we have an unsolicited testimonial from the happy couple...

This is what Dawn and Mitch had to say:
"'The best wedding party we have ever been to.'
'A wedding party that celebrated all that is good about friends coming together and having a brilliant time.'
'The band were just brilliant, to hear, watch and dance to.'
Some of the many comments we have had made to us since our wedding party at the Lewes Town Hall on August 1st this year:
Tongue & Groove we can't thank you enough, for giving us such a spectacular show, we wanted something for everyone, young and old and you certainly gave us that! You overcame the problems with acoustics at the Town Hall, you stopped everyone in their tracks with the amazing entrance and the dance floor was full almost from the word go, you didn't just play your stuff, you personalised the whole show around us and our guests and that's what makes you so special! Thank you Tongue & Groove for the best night ever! Dawn and Mich x"

The restaurant at The Old Polegate Station had never had a band before, but that was the venue for Denise and Stefan's wedding reception, and they really wanted Tongue and Groove. With a bit of improvisation, and some Foxy magic, part of the dining area was soon transformed into a miniature Groove palace where the guests feasted on a buffet of the most delicious pop, rock and funk. Denise and Richie are Richie's work colleagues, so there were plenty of undertakers amongst the party, but this was no sombre occasion. The Bride and Groom swapped their wedding finery for some funky retro threads, and led from the front when it was time to get down and boogie.

A giant marquee in beautiful countryside near Lewes was the venue for Tom and Mandy's wedding celebration. Under a twinkling starlight canopy, their elegantly attired guests got down on the chequerboard dance floor and were rocked late into the night by a brace of blistering sets from the Tongue and Groove party animals.

Tongue and Groove's extensive array of equipment and decor had to be compacted somewhat to fit into the cosy surrounds upstairs at Circus Circus. It was Amanda's birthday, and she'd never had a proper party before. What a way to start! It was a hot, hot night, and through the open windows Tongue and Groove shared the love with the good people of Brighton below. They had Johnny Depp at a film premiere across the road, but Amanda's party was the place to be that night.

Peter J lives in a stunning location right on the beach at Shoreham, and to celebrate his 50th, treated all his friends (and neighbours for several streets away) to the Tongue and Groove experience. As night fell the party really got started, and the guests danced amidst our shimmering psychedelic lightshow. Every garden should should have one.

Sat 20
Jun 09
Tongue and Groove rocked the Pells Pool for the Viva Lewes charity night, in their biggest and best summer show so far. Tongue and Groove at The Pells has become such a fixture in the Lewes social calender that tickets were totally sold out a week beforehand. The huge crowd were treated, as is custom, to singer Phil diving into the pool at the climax of the show - this time holding lit Roman candles. Don't try this at home, kids!

No-one throws a party quite like Phil the Fox. Our legendary frontman celebrated his 40th birthday with the most amazing festival of art and entertainment in his garden and surrounding fields. Tongue and Groove played a storming set early on, before the birthday boy had a chance to get too tired and emotional. After that we were treated to Arthur Brown, Deep Mamboo, and many more fantastic performers, with fireworks, fire dancers, lights, projections, and yet more fireworks, all coming together to create the most magical of nights. Awesome!

To celebrate the successful opening night of the season at Glyndebourne, the cast, crew and staff took a break from the rigours of producing world class opera to get down and dirty with the Tongue and Groove party people. No matter how highbrow our usual cultural millieu, deep down we all love to boogie!

Sat 16

Tongue and Groove provided the entertainment at Seaford Con Club for a fundraiser in aid of a Cystic Fibrosis charity. The generous citizens of Seaford were more than ready to rock out for this worthy cause, and the Groove machine was soon pumping at maximum intensity on absolute top form. A group of the locals just didn't want the party to end, and some members of the band later found themselves in the surreal setting of a Mamma Mia sing-along!

Sat 25

Lewes Con Club was the venue for a wedding party. Simon, the groom, had broken his leg, but didn't let that stop him getting down to the sounds, and having a blast as Tongue and Groove retro rocked it.

The Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists had hired out the Brighton Dome complex for their international conference, and what better way to wake up than with Tongue and Groove rocking out in the Corn Exchange. It was a stunning setting, and the elegantly dressed guests soon came round and started moving to the grooving. Even the President of this august professional body was strutting his stuff to the Groove dudes. As if that wasn't enough fun, the band also had use of the complex's extensive suite of dressing rooms, with plenty of scope for a Spinal Tap "Hello Cleveland" moment wandering the subterranean labyrinth of corridors leading to the stage.

Lesley B celebrated her birthday in grand style, rocking out with Tongue and Groove in the historic surroundings of Southover Grange in Lewes. A splendid time was had by all as the guests got down and got with it.

Hi Phil

I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and the guys for a superb evening's entertainment on Saturday. It may not have been the biggest gig you've ever done, but thanks to you it's gone down as a legendary night in the history of the Cancer Centre! I've heard nothing but high praise from everyone for the band, which considering the mixture of people we had is some achievement. The quality of the sound, the DJ, and the personalised banter were all spot on too.

I hope everything went smoothly for you at the end. Thanks again for everything,

Steve

Karen and Simon celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at Glyndebourne. It was a pleasure to play to such wonderful and friendly people who all looked absolutely stunning. Karen even sang a Dusty number for Simon while he made a film for her. There was a lot of love in the room and Tongue & Groove shimmered amongst it.

Back by popular demand, Tongue & Groove play their second woodfair with the good woodfolk of Bentley. Could it possibly top the momentous occasion from last year? Oh yes! … they were ready this time. Mead was flowing, everyone was grooving and even the Fox did not join in with climbing up the 30’ marquee pole, swinging from the roof and jumping into the crowd. This was a night to be remembered by those who could.

We welcome Sam Flynn into the band. Stacked keyboards and fingers like lightning.

Tongue & Groove travelled to deepest, darkest Dartford to celebrate Laura’s 30th birthday. Many friends and family looked stunned as T & G took the stage, but all were dancing with great gusto by the end … and we mean all … even grandma still has a whole lotta love!

Sadly, after many years of loyal service, Mr Peter and Tongue & Groove have gone separate ways. We wish him all the best in his plentiful new adventures and will miss his energy and enthusiasm in helping T & G to bloom.

Langdale Gardens Street Party - Hove
The bi-annual Langdale street party was blessed with glorious sunshine which allowed the street to party beyond it’s wildest expectations. Tongue & Groove played a fine set, only once being mobbed by a group of caveman clad young locals … later to be joined by their parents (equally caveman clad) who joined in for a few numbers. Why more street do not stage such events as these is a mystery? It was a joyous occasion and the Fox was invited into the den of desire … did he survive?

Third year running, Tongue & Groove rocked the Pells in Lewes in aid of the fine folk from Southover Bonfire Society. This was a family friendly event with a mosh pit of young folk from 3 – 12 in size order at the front lapping it up. Teenagers formed a second rank of moshers with groovy adults bringing up the rear. A full house of over 350 witnessed the Fox jump through a wall of flames and swim a length of the ancient pool whilst massive rockets lit up the sky during the finale. What a night!

07 Jun 08 Plumpton racecourse Fundraiser for Plumpton school. A beautiful marquee was transformed into a casino for the night. The PTA was unsure and nervous about the power of Tongue & Groove, however, a revolution from the mums during the interval and a raucous chant of ‘pants’ led to drastic action and the Fox rising above a bad hair day to please all with a fine display of his ‘lucky pants’. A worthy cause … a wonderful party.

24 May 08 Freya Marilyn Moonbeam Murphy is 18 years old. The Art Hole in Lewes pulsed for one last time as a celebration to this unique teenager who has the most wonderful friends and family … all who oozed love for Freya and her coming of age. Pure magic.

10 May 08 Pip & Bex celebrated 40th’s and 30th’s, but we are not allowed to tell you which. Back at the Con Club in Lewes (despite weirdy vibes from certain regulars … “What are these guys doing that we don’t?” kind of thing) the evening rocked with aplomb, projectiontastic vibes, and many, many happy shinning faces. It was truly beautiful.

26 April 08 Starfish, the unique contemporary music project for young people, (set up by the Fox himself) celebrated their 10th birthday at Pelham House in Lewes. With a fantastic young Starfish band, Diken Marshall, Bass Culture and Herbie Flowers on the bill, Tongue & Groove headlined with an awesome dance set that only ended because the powers that be told us so. Party poopers. We welcome with glee our new drummer … the one and only Tim Ansell.

Bill's Produce Store Christmas Party at Terraces in Brighton. Now a regular for Bill's events, the evening grooved away in fancy dress (60's or 70's) and there were some absolutely stunning costumes. Bill’s platform shoes must get a mention, as does the castle cake … and the extravagant bar bill!

31 Dec 07 We sincerely apologise for the cancellation of the New Year Big Wig Ball. We hope you all had a beautiful New Year without us.

This event will now take place next year at The All Saints in Lewes … that is a Tongue & Groove promise.

Sat
15 Dec 07
Brightwell, the biggest soap dish manufacturer in the world (remember the Bond extravaganza?) invited Tongue & Groove to unleash their Christmas party at Pelham House once more. That we did, and with no screen to hide behind, everyone just had to show all on the dance floor. The Fox had to come up for air a number of times but Andy, our Yoga Guru, submerged himself fully. Anne-Marie’s décor sparkled all night long.

Sun
09 Dec 07
The third in a triad of gigs surpassed all expectation. The Nice People hosted their Christmas party at The Space on the Isle of Dogs, transforming all their guests into carnival attire after greeting them with flame throwers ad fire jugglers. With full projections from VJ Fil, the evening climaxed with a stilt walking accompaniment to ‘I predict a Riot’ whilst a flaming nipple twizzling performance from the buxom and extraordinary Rachel raised the temperature to boiling point.

Sat
08 Dec 07
Adrian celebrated his 40th sporting a sparkling velour John Travolta white suit, complete with wig. The Con Club in Lewes seem to be getting weirdly worried about Tongue & Groove’s charm and appeal. Are they the only band cool people want to book in Lewes?

Fri
07 Dec 07
The Grand Hotel in Brighton hosted the annual AMEX Christmas party. With Rik Patten adding his Hammond sound to the Tongue & Groove machine, the 1000+ employees danced the night away in style … and believe us, they do not hold back, in any way!

A successful and productive trip as The Fox jetted to Hong Kong to investigate the Tongue & Groove phenomena in the far, far East. Many venues in HK invited the Fox to bring Tongue & Groove to the small island. Plans are now afoot and the days of dodgy Filipino cover bands saturating the Hong Kong night life may be numbered … watch out China! It seems that Tokyo and Dubai may also be on the cards … is there no stopping them!

Cast and crew of Macbeth let their hair down in a way only the opera crowd know how. Sadly no Laura this year, but happily, a plethora of Lady Macbeths to fill her latex costume.

Bentley Woodfair.
Having a recent history of disappointing entertainment at this event Bentley were more that sceptical as Tongue & Groove created a paradise within the beer tent (complete with mirror ball) before performing. There was more than one comment from Bentley wood folk along the lines of - "I'm not sure about this … at least we've got some beers back at the tent". However, we can safely say that Bentley just were completely blown away as Tongue & Groove fired up. Before long, many captivated children rushed forward and stormed the stage trying to get the audience to wear their tops 'toga style' and once the food lights were turned out and the tables removed, Bentley witnessed a night to remember. So much so, even the traction engine boys (who have never ever been seen to dance) were pogoing during "I predict a riot" with well developed ale bellies bouncing up and down with wild abandon. We have already been booked for next year!

Karen & Mark's Wedding
An amazing night had by all at Pelham House as Karen & Mark celebrated marital bliss. We must say that all their delightful friends and family danced beautifully with the evening climaxing as the bride and groom sang memorable versions of "Mr Tamborine Man" and "Under the Bridge". Remember that Tongue & Groove are here to please … your dream is our pleasure.

Double 40th Party for Mimi & Paul @ Bill's in Brighton.
With a surreal backdrop of fruit and vegetables and a room full of lawyers and food journalists, Bill's in Brighton vibrated with Tongue & Groove on top form. With young Jim returned from Austria, Steve working wonders on the sound desk and, new addition to the T & G crew, Jamie, keeping us all in order, even the lawyers eventually could not resist the Tongue & Groove charm and let their hair down fully. The only problem was deciding who was in a fit state to drive the van home. Of course, it was the Fox. We must note we were rather shocked at the lightness of some of the guest's fingers whilst leaving the venue … but hey … who said never trust a lawyer? P.S. - The Fox, Jim & Peter headed back to Lewes armed with a barrel of Harvey's and some delicious cakes to perform again in somewhat acoustic style at an amazing party in the Pheonix quarter. Is there no stopping the Tongue & Groove phenomena?

Charity gig for school yurt
Deep within the heart of the great English summer, Tongue & Groove auctioned a gig to raise funds to renovate Annan Farm Small School's yurt (The learning den for Mr Fox's little Fox Cubs). Zoe was the proud winner and used the event to celebrate her 40th Birthday at Lewes Con Club … and what a celebration it was. The evening had it all with a guest appearance from the Tongue & Groove dancing girls dressed in Burlesque golden outfits that needed to be seen to be believed and a spectacular last minute guest appearance from guitarist Phil Greally, suitable attired in sparkling top hat sporting a bare chest (Young Jim was stuck in Austria due to the Pope choosing to kiss the tarmac at a very inconvenient moment). What a night … congratulations Zoe!

Chris & Claire’s Wedding
A beautiful balmy September night in a delightful setting on the outskirts of Lewes. Chris & Claire laid on a wonderful reception for friends and family after tying the knot at Lewes castle in the afternoon. Tongue & Groove raised temperatures to boiling only to be slightly dampened by a classic drunken teenage incident (every wedding must have one). Luckily there was a pond in the dance area to cool off and The Fox is a force to be reckoned on top of his 7” platforms. Very satisfied clientele with only one very sore teenage head in the morning (and maybe a few self administered tell-tale alka seltza from a few of adults as well).

Pells Pool Party well and truly back on with the Tongue & Groove community fundraiser. Balmy evening pumped up the temperature as did the barrage of pyrotechnics. The Fox jumped through a wall of flames to swim his obligatory length in his superman underpants. Southover bonfire society may now have a fire site ... Rock on.

P.S. And, at last, the invited mass skinny dip flourished with a sea of naked fans plunging into the oldest outdoor swimming pool in England.

Tongue & Groove play the world leading soap dish manufacturer, Brightwell's 50th year anniversary at Pelham House. Bond theme, vodka louge, enormous gold finger, bond girls, water pistols ... and what did happen behind that screen? Only the Fox knows ... every one else only saw the silhouettes.

Lewes con club was transformed into a den of retro splendour for a triple birthday celebration. Allegedly there is a picture of Margaret Thatcher on the wall but Tongue & Groove replaced it with a Beetles yellow submarine image. Phew ... that was close.

Sat
09 Jun 07
A cracking party was enjoyed by all at Telscombe Manor ... champagne flowed freely and Tongue and Groove enjoyed a band room complete with sauna and outside swimming pool.

P.S. - Second attempt at aborted skinny dip with society guests as the champagne overruled the breaststroke.

First night party for at the prestigious Glyndebourne opera house cast and crew to kick off the touring season. De Flaudermouse came down at 10pm and Tongue and Groove fired up at 10.30pm ... and then followed the best party Glyndebourne has experienced in many years. Highlight of the evening was when Laura, a angelic cast member, raised the temperature of the room as she grabbed the tambourine ... Actionne!

28 Sept 06 Tongue & Groove's welcomes a new drummer, Craig Brand, who takes over from Kiwi bred Matt Bratton who gave three years loyal service to the band. We were all sad to see Matt go and Phil was even sadder that Craig is now the youngest member of the band by 9 years. Exciting times as Craig has a funky side to be exploited.

The band traveled deep into the Oxfordshire countryside in a very smelly van and played a most spectacular 60th birthday party in a beautifully converted cowshed while the guests, dressed in art school attire feasted on vegetarian Indian cuisine, drank copious amounts of champagne and the younger members of the party inhaled vast amounts of nitrous oxide claiming it was legal. Those that slept bedded in a communal tent. We wish you had been there!

Tongue and Groove rose to the occasion of celebrating a double 60th birthday celebration within the walled garden of Oliver Reed's old mansion in Surrey. A balmy night with over 300 guests in full blown 60's attire grooved the night away and experienced Phil in his infamous superman underpants & a devil mask and Peter ... also in his underpants, creating pyrotechnic madness after uniting with a naked gold fire juggling venus. You needed to be there!
